Navy's Smith, UMBC's Joyce among locals to receive all-league honors

Navy senior Worth Smith was selected first-team All-Patriot League. The forward is the first Midshipman to earn the honor since Chris Harris in 2010. Smith leads Navy this season in scoring (15.4 points per game), rebounding (5.5 per game), 3-point field-goal percentage (.462) and minutes played per game (31.5). Loyola Maryland forward Cam Gregory and guard Andre Walker were named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team.

More men's college basketball: UMBC junior Cody Joyce (Southern) was voted a second-team All-America East Conference player. Joyce is fifth in the conference in scoring (13.5 points per game), sixth in rebounding (5.7) and eighth in field-goal percentage (51.3). …St. Mary's College senior Nicholas LaGuerre (Lansdowne) was named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Juniors Tanner Brooks (St. Paul's) and Troy Spurrier (Glenelg) were second-team all-conference selections. … All-session and single-session tickets for the Big Ten Conference tournament will go on sale to the public today. Monday. The tournament will be at the United Center in Chicago on March 11-15; first-round games will have general-admission seating. Single-session ticket prices range from $20 to $85; all-session tickets are available for $200 or $275. Women's college basketball: McDaniel earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The Green Terror fell to Muhlenberg, 68-64, in Saturday's Centennial Conference championship game but earned one of 20 Pool C bids into the field of 64. It will face Stockton on Friday at Salisbury, which will host first- and second-round games this weekend. The Sea Gulls will take on Bridgewater State on Friday.

Men's college lacrosse: Maryland freshman long-stick midfielder Matt Neufeldt was recognized as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after picking up eight ground balls and causing five turnovers in two wins. … Loyola Maryland junior Zach Herreweyers was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring six goals Saturday against Lehigh. … Navy junior John Connors received Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors after making a season-high-tying 13 saves Saturday against Holy Cross. … Towson's game at Navy today has been moved from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Women's college lacrosse: Maryland redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick was honored as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. She made a season-high seven saves in 53 minutes while allowing four goals in a win over Hofstra. … Penn State senior Maggie McCormick (Liberty) was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. The attacker had four goals and added eight assists over two games. … Navy senior Loren Generi was named Patriot League Midfielder of the Week, while Midshipmen freshman midfielder Jenna Collins (River Hill) was honored as Patriot League Rookie of the Week.

College baseball: No. 20 Maryland scored five runs in the third inning to blow open its game Sunday against Appalachian State (4-5) in a series-clinching 8-2 win in Emerson, Ga. The Terps (7-2) opened the series with a 4-2 win Friday before losing, 9-7, on Saturday.

College wrestling: Johns Hopkins' Paul Bewak earned his fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championships with a third-place finish at Sunday's Regional Championships. Bewak is just the second Blue Jays wrestler to qualify for the national championships four times.

Women's college tennis: Johns Hopkins defeated Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, on Sunday to claim its third straight Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III National Team Indoor Championship.
