Racing for the first time in Maryland, Misconnect made a dramatic surge in the final 50 yards to catch Cutty Shark at the wire and win the $250,000 General George Handicap by a neck Monday at Laurel Park. The 37th running of the General George for older sprinters was one of three stakes on the 10-race Presidents Day card at Laurel. Trained by Bruce Levine and ridden by Kendrick Carmouche, Misconnect ran 7 furlongs in 1 minute, 24.67 seconds. With 11-1 odds in the field of 12, the 4-year-old paid $24.40. Souper Knight finished in third. In the $100,000 Miracle Wood for 3-year-olds, Donald Barr-trained Savvy Street outraced Combat Diver and won by a nose. Under Forrest Boyce, Savvy Street ran a mile in 1:40.36 and paid $8. Combat Diver held on to second, a neck ahead of betting favorite Golden Years. In the $100,000 Wide Country for 3-year-old fillies, Gypsy Judy ran down Hot City Girl in the last of 7 furlongs and pulled out a 31/4-length victory. It was the second straight win for the daughter of Kitalpha, ridden by Horacio Karamanos and trained by Robin Graham. She completed the distance in 1:25.75 and paid $14.80. Hot City Girl was second, followed by Diannestillworks.
