Major League Lacrosse announced Tuesday that Alexander P. "Sandy" Brown (Gilman) has been selected as the second commissioner in the 18-year history of the league. Brown will replace David Gross, who had guided MLL since 2004. Brown played lacrosse at Washington and Lee.
College football: Tony Grantham is returning to Annapolis for a third stint as an assistant with the Navy football program. Grantham, who spent a total of 10 years on staff during two previous stops, spent the 2017 season as the defensive coordinator at Western Illinois.

Indoor soccer: Blast defender Pat Healey has been named to the Major Arena Soccer League Team of the Week. Healey had one goal and two blocks in the Blast's victory against the Syracuse Silver Knights to help keep the team undefeated at home. Tony Donatelli was named honorable mention. The Blast travel to Milwaukee to take on the Wave at 2:05 p.m. Saturday.
Men's college basketball: The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named Bowie State's Darrell Brooks was its Coach of the Week.
Women's college lacrosse: Navy was the unanimous prediction to finish atop the Patriot League this season. The Mids earned all 18 first-place votes after winning their fifth Patriot League championship and advancing the NCAA semifinals last season. Loyola Maryland finished second in the voting. Navy senior midfielder Jenna Collins was selected as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and Loyola junior defender Kristen Yanchoris was selected as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to Collins and Yanchoris, Navy's Kelly Larkin (attacker) and Blake Smith (defender) and Loyola's Hanna Powers (attacker), Taylor VanThof (midfielder) and Kady Glynn (goalie) were named the preseason all-league.
Minor league baseball: The Washington Nationals signed a two-year player-development contract extension with the Harrisburg Senators of the Double-A Eastern League. … The Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League signed outfielder-hitting coach Lew Ford, who played for the Orioles in 2012.
