Women's lacrosse roundup: Chase leads Ohio State to 20-12 win over Winthrop

Katie Chase (Glenelg) scored a game-high five goals to power No. 10 Ohio State past host Winthrop, 20-12, in women's lacrosse Friday.

The teams traded goals for the opening six minutes before the Buckeyes (3-0) went on a 6-0 run. The Eagles (1-1) scored the last two goals of the half for a 9-5 Ohio State lead.


The Buckeyes scored the first two goals of the second half before Winthrop's Jenna Kasmarik (five goals) scored the next three, all on free-position attempts to pull the Eagles within 11-8 with 21:04 remaining.

Ohio State responded with a 3-0 run for a 14-8 lead.


No. 2 North Carolina 19, High Point 5: Allie Foard (Severn) had two goals, but the Panthers (0-1) fell to the host Tar Heels (3-0).

No. 6 Duke 17, Richmond 4: Brigid Smith, Kerrin Maurer and Taylor Trimble each had a hat trick to lead the host Blue Devils (2-0) past the Spiders (0-1).

No. 9 Notre Dame 14, Cincinnati 5: After giving up the opening goal, the Fighting Irish (1-0) scored eight straight and beat the host Bearcats (0-1).

Notre Dame was led by Cortney Fortunato with four goals, and Grace Muller (McDonogh) and Rachel Sexton scored three goals each.


Navy 21, Liberty 6: The visiting Mids (2-0) used a 14-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Lindsay Rheiner (two goals, one assist) started the run with an unassisted goal with 7:47 left in the first half. Arden Smith (Broadneck) finished the run for a 20-3 lead with 7:02 remaining.

The Flames fell to 0-2.
