No. 17 Johns Hopkins edged Marquette, 8-6, in double overtime of the teams' season opener Sunday, the first-ever Division I women's lacrosse game played in Houston.
Junior midfielder Kristen Cannon (Manchester Valley) opened the first overtime with a pair of goals just 90 seconds apart to give the Blue Jays a 7-5 lead. On the first, sophomore midfielder Hailey Schweizer dumped the ball down to Cannon, who turned and scored from 6 yards 1:14 into the period. On the second, she dodged through the defense and beat goaltender Sarah Priem high.
Marquette answered less than a minute later, then evened the score with 18 seconds remaining.
Junior midfielder Dene DiMartino won the draw to start the second overtime, and Hopkins was able to capitalize. DiMartino earned a free-position opportunity 30 seconds in, but instead of shooting, she passed to sophomore midfielder Alexis Maffucci, who took the pass and fired the game-winner.
Maffucci led the Blue Jays with a career-high three points. Cannon also had two goals, while DiMartino and Schweizer each had two points. DiMartino controlled a team-high five draws, and junior defender Josie George (Bryn Mawr) had career highs of seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Navy 17, Longwood 2: Eight players scored goals and 12 players had at least one caused turnover as the host Midshipmen improved to 7-1 all time in home openers.
Senior attacker Loren Generi finished with six points (three goals and three assists) as well as 11 draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Freshman twins Jenna and Julia Collins (River Hill) combined for six points.
Jenna Collins wasted little time getting started. The freshman midfielder scored her first career goal, and Navy's first of the game, less than two minutes into the game. The Mids scored the next two goals before Longwood (0-1) responded with two in a span of 25 seconds.
Navy ended Longwood's run with a five-goal spurt to enter halftime with a 7-2 lead. The Mids kept their foot on the pedal, scoring nine goals and holding the Lancers scoreless in the second half.
