State hoops roundup (Feb. 18): Hofstra's layup with 2.7 seconds left sinks Towson, 84-82

Juan'ya Green scored 21 points with 10 assists and Rokas Gustys made the winning basket to lift host Hofstra to an 84-82 win over Towson on Thursday night.

With the score tied at 82, the Pride (19-8, 11-4 Colonial Athletic Association) got the ball with 13 seconds left after an offensive foul on the Tigers, setting up the winning play. Green passed to Gustys, who dropped in the layup with 2.7 seconds left, and Towson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.


William Adala Moto's 20 points for Towson (18-10, 9-6) led five Tigers in double figures.

Coppin State 71, North Carolina Central 60: Christian Kessee hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead host Coppin State (6-19, 4-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) past N.C. Central (10-15, 5-6).

Josh Treadwell had 18 points and a career-high nine rebounds and Trevon Seymore added 16 points and six assists for Coppin State, which led 29-18 at halftime. Terry Harris added 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who have won two of the last three after dropping four straight games.

Central Connecticut State 76, Mount St.Mary's 72: Brandon Peel had 20 points and 12 rebounds to help the host Blue Devils (4-22, 3-12 Northeast Conference) end a three-game losing streak.

Central Connecticut State protected a 3-point lead twice in the final six seconds by sending the Mountaineers (12-16, 9-6) to the foul line. BK Ashe and Junior Robinson split their free throws to get the Mount back each time within two. Evan Phoenix sealed the win for the Blue Devils, making both free throws with a second left.

Robinson led the Mountaineers with 18 points. Ashe added 17 and Gregory Graves scored 14.

State women

Coppin State 63, North Carolina Central 46: Amber Griffin scored 12 points to lead host Coppin State (9-15, 6-6 MEAC) past N.C. Central (4-19, 2-10).

Coppin State led by 18 points with 2:47 left in the game.
