State hoops roundup (Jan. 16): Coppin State men beat Bethune-Cookman for third win

The Coppin State men won for the first time since Nov. 23.

Christian Kessee scored 14 points, Keith Shivers finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Coppin State beat Bethune-Cookman, 62-54.

The Eagles (3-14, 1-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) ended a 12-game losing streak with the win over the Wildcats (5-13, 2-2).

Kessee shot 5-for-13 from the field but was 4-for-6 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Coppin State hadn't won since Nov. 23. The Eagles lead the all-time series 50-11.

Mount St. Mary's 82, Saint Francis (Pa.) 72: Gregory Graves scored 18 points, Junior Robinson added 15 and five assists, and the visiting Mountaineers (8-11, 5-1 Northeast Conference) shot better from the field than at the free-throw line.

The Red Flash (7-10, 3-3) trailed 34-30 at the break but made five of six to start the second half and took a 43-42 lead with 14:31 remaining.

Massachusetts-Lowell 95, UMBC 89, OT: Matt Harris scored seven of his career-high 32 points in overtime and the visiting River Hawks (6-11, 2-2 America East) beat the Retrievers (5-14, 1-3).

Massachusetts-Lowell scored the first six points of overtime, including four from Harris. UMBC (5-14, 1-3) cut it to 91-89 with 18 seconds remaining, but Logan Primerano and Harris both added a pair of free throws.

Jairus Lyles scored 29 points, with Rodney Elliott (John Carroll) adding 24 plus seven rebounds for UMBC.

Florida A&M 72, Morgan State 65: Trey Warren and Isaiah Omoregie scored 15 points apiece as the host Rattlers (6-12, 2-3 MEAC) beat the Bears (3-14, 1-3).

Morgan State had a 30-27 lead at the break, but Florida A&M rallied in the second half and held on for the win.

Cedric Blossom scored 18 points with seven rebounds for the Bears. Rasean Simpson added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Savannah State 68, UMES 61: Chris Martin scored 18 and Lenjo Kilo added 13 points to help the host Tigers (6-9, 2-2 MEAC) beat the Hawks (4-15, 1-3).

Brian Pearson had nine points and eight rebounds for Savannah State.

Pearson made a put-back to start a 10-2 run that spanned halftime and put the Tigers up 35-24 in the opening seconds of the second half.

Women

Navy 65, Lafayette 58, OT: The visiting Mids (9-8, 3-3 Patriot League) scored the final 12 points in overtime to beat the Leopards (3-13, 1-5).

With the score tied at 58 in overtime, Taylor Dunham made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 43 seconds left for Navy, picking up three of her game-high 21 points. Sarita Condie, who was the other Mid to finish in double digits with 10 points, went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to seal the win in the closing seconds.

UMBC 68, Massachusetts-Lowell 44: Capree Garner led all scorers with 22 points and the visiting Retrievers (11-7, 2-3 America East) got their first win ever against the River Hawks (3-13, 0-4).

Loyola Maryland 63, Boston University 54: Jeneh Perry scored a career-high 18 points and added a game-best 17 rebounds to lead the host Greyhounds (7-10, 4-2 Patriot League) past the Terriers (1-16, 1-5).

Saint Francis (Pa.) 87, Mount St.Mary's 57: The host Red Flash (6-10, 4-1 Northeast Conference) used a 24-7 run in the second quarter to pull away from the Mount (4-12, 2-3).

Alexis Carter had 16 points for the Mount. Saint Francis was led by Jessica Kovatch with 22 points, and Maya Wynn (McDonogh) added 12 points, including four 3-pointers.

Savannah State 60, UMES 42: The visiting Hawks (3-13, 1-3 MEAC) suffered their eighth straight loss.

Tiyonda Davis had 14 points for the Tigers (5-10, 2-2).
