Morgan State opened its football season with a 46-3 loss to host Bowling Green on Thursday night.
The Bears managed just 70 total yards and four first downs in the game, while their FBS opponent rolled up 620 totals yards and built a 30-3 halftime lead.
Nicholas O’Shea kicked a 27-yard field goal for Morgan’s only points. Lavelton Williams led the Bears in rushing with 41 yards on 12 carries. Morgan quarterback DJ Golatt Jr. completed 3 of 9 passes for 24 yards.
Women’s college basketball: Loyola Maryland’s women’s basketball program will tip off the upcoming season with a road contest at Notre Dame.
The Greyhounds will take on the Fighting Irish, who topped Division I in 2017-18 and advanced to the national championship game last winter, in a non-conference tilt on Friday, Nov. 8. This year’s Loyola home opener at Reitz Arena is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20 against Howard.
Five players who earned double-digit starts for the Greyhounds in 2018-19 are back this season, including senior Stephanie Karcz (third team All-Patriot League in 2018-19, Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in 2017-18) and junior Isabella Therien, the conference’s Rookie of the Year in 2017-18.
Men’s college basketball: After a Nov. 1 exhibition game against Johns Hopkins, Loyola Maryland will tip off the regular season with two games on the shores of Lake Michigan. Loyola travels to Milwaukee for a Nov. 5 for an opening-night game at Marquette. The Greyhounds then return to the Great Lakes region on Nov. 9 for a contest at Chicago State. The Greyhounds make their regular-season Reitz Arena debut on Nov. 17 when it takes on Fairfield.
Varsity boys soccer: Archbishop Curley lost its season opener, 2-1 in overtime, to Haverford (Pa.). Scott Giampa scored on a Dylan Sloan cross to tie the game midway through the second half for the Friars.
Varsity girls soccer: Emily Knapp scored and Emma Grueninger made 17 saves in Maryvale’s season-opening 3-1 loss to St. Mary’s Rykien on Wednesday.
Women’s college soccer: Lana Golob and Lyndsey Gutzmer scored two goals apiece in the final 30 minutes to break open what had been a scoreless tie, sending Loyola Maryland (1-1) to a 4-0 defeat at VCU (3-0) on Thursday night.
National Women’s Soccer League: Due to the impending landfall of Hurricane Dorian on the Florida peninsula this weekend, the Washington Spirit’s game with the Orlando Pride on Saturday has been postponed to Oct. 5.
Men’s college soccer: Navy begins its season Friday night as it hosts UNC Asheville at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility at 7 p.m.
The Midshipmen are looking to pick up where they left off last season, where they won the final four games of the regular season. Navy brings back nearly its entire roster with all 11 starters back and 19 of 20 letter winners returning.
Minor league baseball: Bowie Baysox manager Buck Britton has been selected as the Eastern League Manager of the Year.
Britton has led the Baysox to a record of 74-61 this season and Bowie holds a one-game lead over the Erie SeaWolves for first place in the second-half standings in the Western Division.
