It's increasingly difficult to trace the narrative arc of Michael Phelps' comeback without hitting upon Ray Lewis.
When Phelps avoided jail time for his drunken-driving incident at his December 2014 sentencing, Lewis was there for him in the courthouse. When Phelps arrived at the Arizona center where he received treatment for alcohol abuse, he began each day with a chapter from a book Lewis gave to him, "The Purpose Driven Life."
So the Ravens linebacker's ecstatic tweets Tuesday night as Phelps won his 20th and 21st Olympic gold medals were not at all out of place.
Then, this afternoon, he posted another message: "21 gold metals, when U reach 22 you will be at my high school jersey number. Don't tell me God isn't Intentional, let's go Lil bro. USA!!!"
The God-works-in-mysterious-ways message was not well received. Phelps likely will race in three more event finals: the 100-meter butterfly, 200 individual medley and 4x100 medley relay. If he wins just one more gold, would it be the work of some higher power?
Lewis later deleted the tweet and moved on to other Olympic crushes.
