What they're saying about former Ravens, Colts coach Ted Marchibroda

Former Ravens and Colts players and team officials reflect on coach Ted Marchibroda, who died Saturday morning at his home in Virginia. He was 84.

"He was the first coach in my career that told us winning is a part of your life. We'd start with getting to the playoffs. Then each and every week he told us to know our opponents; the field position, down personnel sets and time left. He told us it was a matter of chess, that being a good athlete was just not good enough. He'd say, ''See it, believe it and go play it.' I'd go through a wall for that man."

Bruce Laird, former Colts safety

"Ted was the guy when I first arrived coming in as a rookie. He was a really good coach, very offensive-minded and he could put points on the board. Ted was gentleman on and off the field. I never once heard him say anything demeaning to a player regardless of the situation. He was a true gentleman, a great diplomat for the NFL."

Peter Boulware, former Ravens linebacker

"Ted never got the credit he deserved for being one of the offensive genuises in pro football. Look at the success and his track record whereever he went. It was simplistic, but the no-huddle he used was built on skill set, not just about scheme. He may have had the great offensive mind in the game."

Wally Williams, former Ravens offensive lineman

"Ted was a tremendous individual, a great offensive mind, and someone whom all of his players dearly loved."

Bert Jones, former Colts quarterback

"The guys like me who played for Ted here in Baltimore will always be tied together. Whenever we got together, we had a great time as teammates, and Ted was a big part of that. We will sorely miss him."

Lydell Mitchell, former Colts running back

"Ted Marchibroda was an excellent coach; success followed him wherever he coached. He was one of the most competitive men I've ever encountered. But mostly, Ted was a good man – spiritually intact, kind and full of grace. What an honor to have served with him even for so short a period of time."

David Modell, former Ravens president

"Ted Marchibroda was a true NFL 'lifer.' He had tremendous success both as a family man and as a true pioneer in our game. He inherited a tough move of a legendary franchise owned by the late, great Mr. [Art] Modell. He did the best he could under tough circumstances in an ever-evolving game. He made all of us true professionals who were better players and, most importantly, better men."

Rob Burnett, former Ravens defensive end

"Ted Marchibroda was a kind man and a great leader and coach. He really cared for everyone he dealt with on and off the field. He will be missed."

Jonathan Ogden, former Ravens offensive tackle

"He was like a father to me. He made me believe in myself and extended my career with his coaching. Clearly, he was more than a coach to me. He was a good, good person and a great man."

Tony Siragusa, former Ravens defensive tackle

"Coach was a man who everyone liked and respected. He was an innovator of the game who made us better players and better men. He will be sorely missed."

Vinny Testaverde, former Ravens quarterback
