Welcome to Baltimore Sports Blitz

Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Matt Vensel. You might remember me from blogs such as Virtual Vensanity and, well, OK, that's it. I have joined the staff at The Baltimore Sun after three awesome years at our sister paper, b free daily, which is why Virtual Vensanity has been retired and I'm starting fresh with this new blog, Baltimore Sports Blitz.

Fans of the old blog can expect the same type of attitude and opinions, and my appreciation remains for random Baltimore sports nuggets such as Ray Rice singing Boyz II Men, Luke Scott bashing President Barack Obama and DJ Pauly D talking about Joe Flacco's "Jersey Shore" cred.

If you're not familiar with my work at b, let me give you a quick rundown.

I grew up in Pittsburgh. I hope you won't hold that against me, but I've been here long enough -- five charmed years -- to understand if you do. I spent five somewhat productive years at Penn State before getting my graduate degree from Towson. I am a java junkie, a "Madden" enthusiast and a huge hockey nut. On the rare occasion I can pry myself away from my PC, I can usually be found at an area hockey rink getting pucks shot at my head.

A few years ago when I finally conceded that I wasn't skilled enough, big enough or crazy enough to play goalie in the NHL, I decided to do the next best thing: tell the interesting stories of those who are actually good at sports.

That path improbably led me to The Baltimore Sun, and I'm humbled by this opportunity and thrilled by the possibilities at this great newspaper. I'm honored to work alongside a bunch of talented sports writers here, and legends such as John Steadman and John Eisenberg have come and gone, leaving large loafers to fill. I rock the flip flops, though, so I will be forced to do my own thing.

In this space, you will find a little bit of everything. Commentary and analysis on the Ravens, Orioles, Terps, Capitals and more. Random sports-related photos and YouTube videos. Contests that showcase my readers' ability to grow facial hair, make me laugh with funny photo captions and write ridiculous Ray Lewis haikus.

I strongly believe that sports shouldn't be taken too seriously -- well, most of the time, at least -- so I'll set just one rule here at Baltimore Sports Blitz: have fun. Thanks for coming along for the joyride.

One more thing: You have probably noticed that this blog looks different than all the other blogs at The Baltimore Sun. That's because we're launching a new blog platform and I am the official guinea pig. We'll be working out all the kinks over the next few days so please bear with us. Feedback is welcome
