Washington's 13-5 victory over Elizabethtown Tuesday was notable because the Shoremen put on an offensive display that even coach Jeff Shirk couldn't recall having seen.
The team scored 10 goals on 18 shots in the third quarter. To put this in perspective, the output matched the total number of goals Washington had scored in four quarters in a loss to Washington & Lee last Saturday.
"Elizabethtown's goalie played well in the first half. We hit him a lot," Shirk said Thursday afternoon. "I think the big thing that we stressed at halftime was guys needed to shoot to score as opposed to just throwing the ball at the cage. So I think guys made the adjustment and once they got a little confidence, then it just started to roll."
Scoring goals has been a priority for the Shoremen, who have finished each of the last three season averaging less than 10 goals per game. The hope is that Tuesday's outburst might fuel the offense in the future.
"I think any time that you're scoring goals and you're feeling good about yourself, I think that bodes well for the future," Shirk said. "So we're hoping to try to follow that up this Saturday [at Wesley]."
