University of Maryland, Baltimore issues "shelter in place" order amid violent protests

The University of Maryland Baltimore issued a "shelter in place" order for its campus, telling students and staff not to leave buildings as protests turned violent downtown Saturday.

"UMB Police have issued a shelter in place order for the UMB campus," the alert said. "Do not leave buildings. Avoid campus until further notice."

The weeklong protests and marches over the death of 25-year-old Baltimore man Freddie Gray after he was injured in police custody turned violent outside Oriole Park at Camden Yards downtown, with demonstrators clashing with officers downtown.
