The story of Michael Phelps and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's emerging bromance is one told through social media and #brands, because that's where we are as a culture.

Let's start in last June. Here we see the first of many sculpted muscles, and a message without any apparent provocation.

Another day in the #dojo Calling out @therock to come on down and join us for a day... He might be afraid tho ?

Fast-forward to mid-January. Phelps has moved from Baltimore to Tempe, Ariz. He's training for the Olympics now. Again, another callout of The Rock. Again, more rippling muscles.

When you're in Tempe you know where to find me @therock !! Bring it on!! @kkrirsh

Less than a week later, Under Armour announces that The Rock has joined the fitness brand on an endorsement deal. Phelps, of course, is also an Under Armour sponsor.

Phelps, increasingly desperate, reaches out to Yahoo Sport UK.

“I would love to hang out with The Rock,” Phelps says "with the sort of wide-eyed enthusiasm you’d expect from a starstruck teenager."

He adds: “He’s called me out a few times on Instagram,” a claim I could not substantiate in my review of The Rock's exhaustive social media output. “I keep chirping back at him but I don’t get any responses. I’m waiting for him to finally reply one day and we can show him how to really lift!"

Finally, Phelps gets his wish. Kind of.

More than two months after Phelps' last Instagram callout, Kevin Plank (probably) orchestrates another miracle: On Sunday, The Rock responds.

He compliments his fellow Under Armour sponsor's "focus, ambition and relentless work ethic. It's why he's the GOAT." The Rock also notes Phelps' awesome caloric intake.

Are they friends now? I don't know. Have they even worked out together? Unclear. But if this blossoming relationship doesn't culminate with a cameo appearance by Phelps on "Ballers," I will be very, very disappointed.
