After opening the season with four consecutive games on the road, UMBC will play at home for the first time when No. 15 Towson visits UMBC Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Retrievers' four-game road stretch was their longest since 2003, and they are looking forward to playing in a familiar venue.
"We're excited to be playing at home," coach Don Zimmerman said Thursday. "We've been on the road for six weeks. I think if you talk to any coach and any team, they like to play at home. That's where you practice. We came out of a four-game road stretch 2-2, and now we have a chance to play at home on Saturday, and I think the guys are excited."
Home has been good to UMBC. Since 2003, the Retrievers are 58-29, with nine winning home records in 12 seasons in that span.
The Retrievers will put that mark to the test against a Tigers team that lost to Navy, 8-7, in triple overtime. Zimmerman dismissed the notion that Towson (3-2) might have overexerted itself in a game it had multiple chances to win.
"I'm sure Towson will be ready," he said. "They're a very good team. They proved that when they beat Hopkins [on Feb. 10]. They beat Hopkins, a team that we lost to by 12 goals [16-4 on Feb. 7]. So they're very good. They're well coached, they've got good personnel. They had a tough game down at Navy. Navy is always tough at home. So we expect Towson to come over to UMBC ready to give us their best shot."
