Towson graduated six starters from last year's squad that advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals, but the Tigers continue to maintain a measure of respect in their own conference.
The program was voted as the preseason favorite to capture the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title. Towson, which has won three of the last four championships, earned five of six first-place votes to collect 25 points in the voting released Monday.
Fairfield was picked to finish second with 21 points and had the one other first-place vote. Hofstra (15 points), Drexel (11), Delaware (10) and Massachusetts (8) rounded out the rest of the league.
The Tigers also placed a conference-high five players on the preseason All-CAA team. The group includes senior attackmen Ryan Drenner (Westminster) and Joe Seider (Hereford), senior midfielder Mike Lynch (Boys' Latin), senior long-stick midfielder Tyler Mayes (Calvert Hall), and senior short-stick defensive midfielder Jack Adams (Hereford). Last spring, Drenner shared league Player of the Year honors with Fairfield attackman Colin Burke.
Fairfield put three players on the All-CAA team including Burke, a sophomore who was picked as the preseason Player of the Year. Hofstra is represented by four players, and Drexel has one.
