Towson coach elaborates on pair of demotions

A pair of developments that went largely unnoticed in Towson's 12-6 loss to No. 2 Johns Hopkins a week ago was the absences of senior attackman Matt Lamon and sophomore Andrew Hodgson from the starting lineup.

Junior Dan Kramer made his first start of the season, joining junior Matt Hughes and senior Sean Maguire on attack. Senior Michael Brashears was added to the first midfield of sophomore Thomas DeNapoli and freshman Justin Mabus.

Coach Shawn Nadelen did not provide much detail on Hughes' demotion, saying only, "Dan Kramer got his opportunity there." But Nadelen was more expansive about Hodgson's absence.

"[T]he middie scenario came out just based on how the lines shifted out," he said. "Even if Andrew doesn't start, he's still one of our top middies. We're just trying to find the best mixtures within our personnel. If we had to put our top three middies on the field at the end of the game, Andrew would be one of them."

Kramer finished with two shots (both on goal), one groundball and two turnovers, while Lamon – a three-year starter who scored 11 goals last season – did not record a stat. Brashears committed one turnover, while Hodgson – who led the team in assists with 12 in 2011 – scored one goal on four shots, collected three groundballs, and committed one turnover.

But Nadalen said the plan for Saturday's contest at Loyola is to start Kramer and Brashears again in the attack and midfield, respectively, with Lamon and Hodgson coming off the bench.
