Terps Cummings, Griffin, Douty named Big Ten position players of the year

Maryland dominated the position Player of the Year awards announced Monday by the Big Ten Conference as Taylor Cummings was named Midfielder of the Year; Brooke Griffin, Attack Player of the Year; and Megan Douty, Defensive Player of the Year.

The trio led the No. 1 Terps (17-1) to a perfect regular season in the inaugural year of Big Ten women's lacrosse.

Cummings, a McDonogh graduate and last season's Tewaaraton Award winner, led the conference in points with 4.56 per game and draw controls with 6.94 per game, as well as in ground balls and caused turnovers per game. She has 53 goals and 29 assists as the defending national champs head into the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 seed.

Griffin, a South River graduate, has 39 goals and 18 assists while Douty leads the stingiest defense in the Big Ten. The Terps allowed just 7.28 goals per game. Her unit kept four Big Ten opponents below double digits.

Penn State's Missy Doherty, a Maryland graduate, was named Coach of the Year. Doherty guided the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten tournament championship as they won nine of their last 10 games.

Penn State's Emi Smith was named Goaltender of the Year and Northwestern's Selena Lasota was Freshman of the Year.
