Starting attack for Salisbury men's lacrosse could feature couple new faces

Senior attackman Kyle Goss got his first start of the season in No. 17 Salisbury's 9-8 overtime loss to Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday. Coach Jim Berkman said Goss, who scored one goal on three shots, will start again on Wednesday against Hampden-Sydney (2-2), but was noncommittal about senior Mike Kane and sophomore Carson Kalama making their sixth consecutive starts.

"I don't know at this point," Berkman said Tuesday. "It's still up in the air a little bit."

Kane, Kalama and sophomore Chris Joyce have been in a rut lately. Kane, who led the Sea Gulls (2-3) in goals with 48 last spring, has scored just once in his last two starts and did not take a shot in Sunday's loss to the Battling Bishops (4-0).

Kalama (Bel Air) has registered four goals and two assists in five starts, and Joyce has posted one goal and three assists in four games after a six-goal, one-assist showing in the team's season-opening rout of Greensboro.

"Right now, we've got to get more out of them," Berkman said of the attack. "But we also have to get more out of our first midfield."

Goss took Joyce's usual spot in the starting lineup as the team sought to shake up the unit.

"We weren't getting it done from the left-handed attack spot," Berkman said. "[Goss] seized an opportunity, and he'll be starting there tomorrow."

Berkman said goalkeeper Connor Anderson will make his second straight start. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior made 10 saves in the loss to Ohio Wesleyan.

"I thought he played pretty well," Berkman said. "He gave us an opportunity to win the game against a very good OWU team, one of their best teams in recent memory. He had 10 saves, and if you hold somebody to nine, you should win the game."
