If it weren't meaningless in terms of wins and losses, Friday night's preseason affair with the Chiefs would have an interesting storyline as three former Ravens return to Baltimore. The final score doesn't matter, though, so Le'Ron McClain, Jared Gaither and Kelly Gregg can't get revenge against their former employers this time around.
All three players were deemed expendable by the Ravens in the offseason, but you can expect a lot of smiles, hugs and handshakes at M&T Bank Stadium. It would be a different story if this were a regular season game.
"Those guys are all good players," Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters this week. "They've all proven themselves, and they've been contributors here, and it'll be fun going up against those guys. Three guys that we just had here, and thought we had a chance -- maybe to keep here as recently as two weeks [ago] -- [and now] you're playing against them. So, that'll be kind of an odd thing."
Each has something to prove with his new team this season. McClain says he wants to plow running lanes for Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs, but you know he'll be campaigning for carries by the end of the season. Gaither, who wasn't brought back after a mysterious and maddening 2010 season in Baltimore, will try to live up to his lofty potential (presumably to secure an appropriate payday). Gregg wants to show he can still play.
The Chiefs appear to be an up-and-coming team after dethroning the Chargers in the AFC West last season, and they are counting on this trio of ex-Ravens to help them continue their ascent to the top.
Your turn: Which former Ravens player will have the biggest impact for the Chiefs this season?
