Sporting News: Baltimore is the 29th-best sports city

, the rankings aren’t solely based on winning championships (but they certainly help). For a 12-month span from summer 2010 to summer 2011, point values were assigned to categories such as win-loss records, postseason appearances, “applicable power ratings,” the number of teams and attendance.

The Dallas-Ft. Worth market (whose Mavericks won the NBA title) topped the list. Boston (ditto for the Bruins in the NHL) was second, followed by Philadelphia, Chicago-Evanston, New York and Pittsburgh.

Cities such as Raleigh, Salt Lake City and Oklahoma City are also considered to be sportier than Baltimore.

Washington was ranked 12th. College Park was 73rd. Annapolis was 122th. Emmitsburg was 219th. Towson was 234th. Princess Anne was 262nd. I have no idea what sports are played in Emmitsburg and Princess Anne.

Knowing how passionate Baltimore fans are -- and how knowledgeable most of you are -- I don’t put much stock in these rankings. Charm City is a great sports city, Blast and all. What are your thoughts on the list?
