Snakehead record broken on Potomac River

Emory (Dutch) Baldwin III from Indian Head, Md., shows off his MD record 18.42 pound snakehead caught on the Potomac on May 20. (HANDOUT)

Emory Baldwin III won a game of tug-of-war with an 18-pound snakehead, and he has a new record to show for it.

Baldwin and his fishing partner, Franklin Shotwell, were out on the Maryland side of the Potomac River when Baldwin reeled in a snakehead that weighed in at 18.42 pounds, the heaviest ever recorded.

Baldwin said Shotwell first saw the fish on Baldwin's side of the boat, and the resident of Indian Head in Charles County snagged it with his compound bow. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources confirmed the record at the Gray Brothers Market in Marbury.

The state usually recognizes fish caught only by rod-and-reel in its records, with the exception of northern snakeheads, blue catfish and flathead catfish.
