The first modern Olympics (Athens, 1896), were this Baltimorean's place to shine. Garrett, 20, a junior at Princeton, won the discus and shot put, and finished second in the long jump and high jump. His discus throw — 97 feet, 7 inches — was two feet better than that of the Greek champion, the heavy favorite, and set a world record. Garrett won two more medals at the 1900 Games (shot put and triple jump).
