The Ravens made it official Saturday, placing top cornerback Jimmy Smith on injured reserve after he underwent surgery on his sprained left foot.
By shutting down Smith, the Ravens created a roster spot to sign cornerback Rashaan Melvin off the Miam Dolphins' practice squad.
Melvin is a 6-foot-2, 193-pound second-year player from Northern Illinois. He had been on injured reserve after suffering a pulled hamstring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a rookie. He was active for two games as a rookie.
He was cut by the Buccaneers after two regular-season games, then was signed to the Dolphins practice squad.
At Northern Illinois, Melvin recorded 172 tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble and 35 passes defended, the second most in school history. He was not taken in the 2013 draft.
Smith's surgery, performed by Carolina Panthers team doctor and renowned foot and ankle specialist Robert Anderson, was successful, according to a source.
