Notebook: Penn State names David Shriver director of lacrosse operations

Penn State has announced that men's lacrosse volunteer assistant coach David Shriver (Boys' Latin) will serve as director of operations for the 2014 season.

Shriver, who has coached for two years under Jeff Tambroni, oversees the extra-man unit and offensive personnel. The Nittany Lions' offense has improved each of the past two seasons, from 8.14 goals per game (2011) to 10.47 (2013).


Shriver's father, Bob, has been the head coach at Boys' Latin for the past 34 years.

Boys' Latin grad Cohn joins Furman staff

Furman head coach Richie Meade has announced the addition of David Cohn (Navy) to his staff as volunteer assistant coach.

Cohn, a native of Cockeysville, has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. The team compiled a 23-6 overall record the last two seasons, including a program-best 15-3 record in 2013.

Cohn played for the Midshipmen under Meade from 2004 to 2007. He has spent the past six years in the Navy as a surface warfare officer, serving in numerous division officer and officer-in-charge positions.

Former North County coach gets Mount Union job

Former North County boys coach Brian Stewart has been named men's head coach at Division III Mount Union. Stewart spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Limestone, in Gaffney, S.C.

Before returning to Limestone, Stewart spent five years serving in the Navy. He was commissioned as an ensign in 2006 and was stationed at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I., as part of the athletic department.

Sea Gulls' Kustron to W&J

Washington & Jefferson has announced the hiring of Kevin Kustron (Salisbury) as assistant coach.

With the Sea Gulls, Kustron was a member of three NCAA Division III national championship teams (2005, 2007, 2008) and captained the 2008 squad. During his four-year playing career, Salisbury lost just one game -- the 2006 national championship, 13-12, to SUNY Cortland.

Fried to coach U.S. women again

After leading the United States to its seventh Federation of International Lacrosse world championship in July, Ricky Fried of Columbia has been selected to coach the 2017 U.S. women's national team, US Lacrosse announced.

Team USA will seek a third consecutive world title and eighth overall.

Virginia Military Institute announced that defenseman Tom Brown (Boys' Latin) will join the team for next season. Brown was ranked No. 33 among Inside Lacrosse Magazine's Top 40 defensemen in the publication's recruiting rankings. Brown was a two-year letter-winner and named second-team All-Metro by The Baltimore Sun. He also was a three-year letter-winner for the Lakers football team, playing both left tackle and defensive end, and earning first-team All-Conference honors. ... Attackman Max Greene (Gilman) will join Harvard for the 2014 season, the school announced. A three-year letter-winner in lacrosse and a letter-winner in ice hockey, he was named an Under Armour All-American in 2013. ... Division II Colorado State-Pueblo will add men's and women's lacrosse for the spring 2015 season. Also, Division III Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Ky, said it will add women's lacrosse that season.
