Gabe Voumard did not play in Navy's 10-6 loss to No. 17 Lehigh in a Patriot League tournament semifinal a week ago after Anne Arundel County police said they arrested the junior midfielder for threatening a taxi driver with a butter knife on April 20.
But coach Rick Sowell said it is unclear whether Voumard, a starter who is tied for second on the team in assists (eight) and tied for third in points (23), will return for Saturday's regular-season finale at No. 7 Maryland.
"I do not know that at this point," Sowell said Tuesday afternoon when he was asked about Voumard's status.
Senior Erik Hoffstadt started for Voumard in the setback to the Mountain Hawks, finishing with zero goals on four shots, one assist and three turnovers. Sowell said a number of players joined seniors Pat Durkin and Austin Heneveld on the first line.
"There really wasn't one set line," he said. "[Sophomore] Kevin Wendel probably got more playing time out of it than anyone, and he had a nice goal against Lehigh, which I think helps his confidence not going into Saturday's game but hopefully going into next year. If Gabe does play, we're certainly excited to have him back in there, and he'll play a big role for us. But if he is unable to play, we'll do the best we can with the guys that we have."
Sowell said Wendel, who scored one goal on four shots, would likely be first in line to start if Voumard is unavailable. Asked whether Voumard's run-in with the law was disappointing, Sowell said he could not elaborate on the situation.
"We'll just wait to see how things play out," he said. "It's an unfortunate situation. Obviously, you've heard one side, and there's always two sides to every story. At this point, I really don't want to comment on it."
