Navy women announce 17-game schedule for 2013

Navy women's lacrosse coach Cindy Timchal has announced the team's schedule for the 2013 season, which includes a home game against two-time defending national champion Northwestern. Navy will play six Patriot League contests and 17 games overall.

The Midshipmen, who have won three straight Patriot League titles and advanced to three consecutive NCAA tournaments, will open the season  Feb. 10 against Winthrop. The Navy-Winthrop contest will be one of 11 home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.


Navy will play at first-time opponent Liberty on Feb. 16 before returning to Annapolis for a six-game homestand. The Mids will play the first two games over the course of one weekend, taking on High Point on Feb. 22 and Monmouth on Feb. 24.

High Point went 7-0 in league play last spring to win the National Lacrosse Conference regular-season title. The Panthers will compete in the Big South Conference for the 2013 season.


Navy will host first-time opponent Richmond the following Saturday (March 2). Richmond finished last season at No. 18 in the national RPI rankings and advanced to the Atlantic 10 title game.

The Mids, who were 6-0 in Patriot League play last season, will open the conference slate at home against Lehigh on March 9. Navy defeated Lehigh, 14-4, last spring to even the all-time series at 4-4.

For the third straight season, Navy will play a regular-season game against Northwestern. Navy will host the two-time defending national champion  March 11 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy and Northwestern met in Annapolis in 2011 and in Evanston, Ill., in 2012.

The sixth and final game of the nearly monthlong homestand will be against New Hampshire on March 13.

Navy will play just its second road game of the season at league member Bucknell on March 16. Navy posted a 10-goal win over Bucknell in 2012 and leads the all-time series 5-0.

On March 20, Navy will travel to Washington for a first-time meeting with George Washington of the Atlantic 10.

Navy host Patriot League-member Lafayette on March 23 and will look to improve on its 5-0 all-time record against the Leopards.

The Mids will then play back-to-back nonconference games, first hosting UC Davis on March 27 and then traveling to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood on April 2.


Navy will travel to Holy Cross on April 6 for a rematch of last year's Patriot League tournament final. Navy defeated Holy Cross, 18-11, in the league title game and also defeated the Crusaders by the same score in the regular season.

The Mids will host Colgate on April 13 in their final Patriot League home game of the regular season. Navy earned an 8-6 victory at Colgate in 2012 for its fifth straight win in the series.

Navy's final nonconference game of the regular season will be April 19 against first-time opponent Jacksonville. Jacksonville was 15-4 in 2012 and won the National Lacrosse Conference tournament title. Jacksonville will compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2013.

The Mids will close the regular season in Washington on April 21 against American. Navy defeated American 14-7 in the Patriot League tournament semifinal last season and also won 19-6 in the regular season.

The four-team Patriot League tournament will be held the weekend of April 26-28. The winner will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament, which is expanding from 16 to 26 teams for the 2013 season.

Navy will also host Japan's national team in a scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Feb. 3 at 11 a.m.


Navy was 18-3 in 2012 and finished the season ranked No. 19 in the De Beers Media Poll and No. 14 in the national RPI rankings. Navy returns 10 starters, including all seven of its starting attackers and midfielders.
