Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse grabs fourth and final spot in NEC tournament

After a two-year absence from the Northeast Conference tournament, Mount St. Mary's guaranteed that it will play in the league playoffs next week.

The Mountaineers upset Hobart, 10-8, on Saturday, improving to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference. With Sacred Heart losing, 13-8, to St. Joseph's -– which dropped the Pioneers to 6-7 and 2-4 -– Mount St. Mary's gained the fourth and final berth in the league tournament by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker earned in a 10-2 rout of Sacred Heart on March 28.

The Mountaineers toppled the Statesmen thanks to a game-high four points on two goals and two assists from sophomore midfielder Ryan Lamon (Severn) and three goals from junior midfielder Justin Gosnell (Havre de Grace). Freshman goalkeeper Matt Vierheller made 10 saves.

Mount St. Mary's will face top-seeded St. Joseph's (10-5, 6-0) in one semifinal of the Northeast tournament on Thursday in Philadelphia with the time of the game to be announced. No. 2 seed Hobart (7-6, 4-2) will clash with No. 3 seed Bryant (7-8, 4-2) in the other semifinal.

The title game is scheduled for Saturday at a time to be determined.
