Michael Phelps spent part of Tuesday recounting how he'd told Ryan Lochte not to do anything bad.

Then the Olympic swimming champion went out during the first hole of the Ryder Cup's celebrity matches and did something very good.

After fans in Chaska, Minn., welcomed him to Hazeltine National Golf Club with chants of "23 gold!" Phelps limbered up by dropping his driver, bending over and doing his signature arm-swinging, back-slapping warmup. Then he went ahead and landed a tee shot in the middle of the fairway.

It was the start of a good nine holes. He and partner Kelly Slater, a former world surfing champion, beat former English sprinter John Regis and former tennis star Martina Navratilova, 6 up. The United States won three of the four matches and halved another for a 3-0-1 win.
