Former Ravens tackle Michael Oher released by Titans after one season

Michael Oher is a free agent for second straight offseason.

After starting every game over five seasons with the Ravens, offensive tackle Michael Oher returned to the state where he grew up, signing a five-year, $20 million free-agent deal with the Tennessee Titans last March.

However, Oher's homecoming lasted just one season. The Titans released Oher on Thursday with an injury designation, a move that was hardly surprising given the offensive lineman's struggles during the 2014 campaign.

Oher, 28, was paid $6 million by the Titans this past season. If he had been on the team's roster through Friday afternoon, $3.35 million of Oher's scheduled $4 million salary in 2015 would have been guaranteed.

Now, Oher will be a free agent for the second straight offseason.

Oher started the first 11 games at right tackle for the Titans before ultimately going on injured reserve with a toe injury. He was rated one of the league's worst offensive tackles by Pro Football Focus.

A first-round NFL draft pick by the Ravens in 2009, Oher started all 80 games for the Ravens over five seasons, playing his best football during the team's Super Bowl XLVII run. The team loved Oher's toughness and durability. However, consistency was an issue as Oher was prone to penalties and struggled at times against top pass rushers.

The Titans, who drafted offensive tackle Taylor Lewan (Michigan) in the first round last year, were widely criticized for the size of the contract they gave Oher. The Ravens never were aggressive in trying to re-sign the former Ole Miss standout, opting instead to give former fifth-round pick Rick Wagner every opportunity to win the starting right tackle role.

Wagner seized a starting spot in training camp and graded out as one of the top right tackles in the NFL in 2014.
