Maryland men's lacrosse still awaiting word on injury to faceoff specialist Charlie Raffa

No. 3 Maryland is still waiting for an update on the health of faceoff specialist Charlie Raffa, who left Saturday's 12-5 thumping of Big Ten foe Penn State in the first quarter and did not return.

A team spokesman said Monday that Raffa was scheduled to undergo further tests later in the morning and said coach John Tillman might have more information to disclose during his weekly conference call on Tuesday morning.

Raffa was injured during a collision with Nittany Lions junior midfielder Ryan Guittare with 2:39 left in the opening period Saturday. The senior left Byrd Stadium clutching his right shoulder and elbow and walked immediately into the locker room without assistance from the team's medical staff.

After a slow start in which he had won just 43.8 percent (14 of 32) of his faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls in the first three games he played, Raffa appeared to show flashes of the second-team All-American who finished last season ranked second in Division I in faceoff percentage (68.6) and 11th in ground balls per game (7.6).

In his past five games, Raffa had won 70.0 percent (56-of-80) of his draws and scooped up 24 ground balls. For the season, he had won 62.5 percent (70-of-112) and accumulated 31 ground balls.

If the injury is serious, the Terps (9-1, 2-0 Big Ten) could turn to junior Jon Garino Jr., who won 8 of 10 faceoffs and collected seven ground balls Saturday. Garino has won 57.4 percent (35-of-61) and grabbed 27 ground balls.

Maryland will play host to No. 19 Loyola Maryland (6-5) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Byrd Stadium.
