Terps' Matt Rambo won't play until he meets obligations, coach John Tillman says

Maryland coach John Tillman said Tuesday that starting attackman Matt Rambo will not play until he completes some unspecified obligations.

Rambo, a sophomore attackman, had been suspended indefinitely after being charged with first- and second-degree assault and malicious destruction of property related to an Oct. 22 incident in College Park. The incident also led to the dismissal of student assistant coach Brian Cooper.

The first-degree assault charges against Rambo and Cooper were dismissed in November. But the second-degree assault and destruction of property charges are still pending.

Tillman, who spoke during the program's media day, said Rambo's case was investigated by the university, which determined that he could remain enrolled at school. But Tillman said Rambo must meet some team-imposed requirements before being cleared to play.

"In terms of Matt and playing, even though Matt was allowed to stay, there are certain standards and expectations we have in our program that are always going to be higher than the typical student here at Maryland and a lot of times, other programs," Tillman said. "Matt has some consequences and he's got some expectations that he's going to have to fulfill before he's back on the field. He's doing a great job with the things we've asked him to do.

"Once he gets to the point where I feel like he can represent Maryland, he will be back on the field, and if he continues to do the things the way he's been doing, he'll be back pretty soon."

Rambo's return would be significant for the Terps, who lost a pair of starting attackmen in Mike Chanenchuk (36 goals and 23 assists before graduating) and Connor Cannizzaro (26, 8 before transferring to Denver). Rambo would return as the team's leading scorer after he had 30 goals and six assists in his first season of college lacrosse.

Maryland opens the season Feb. 14 against Navy.
