With a 5-3 win over No. 2 seed Florida State and Virginia's win Friday night over North Carolina, the Maryland baseball team secured its place in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament final, in its final year in the league.
Freshman Mike Shawaryn threw seven shutout innings for the sixth-seeded Terps, who are making their first ACC tournament appearance since 2005. He allowed just two hits, and struck out six.
Sophomore third baseman Jose Cuas drove in three runs, including two on a bases-loaded double in the third inning.
On Thursday, Maryland kicked off its tournament with a 7-6 win over No. 3 seed Virginia. Senior Jake Stinnett struck out 10 in eight innings, and allowed four runs, three earned, on 10 hits to earn the win.
Outfielder Charlie White homered to lead off the game, and St. Paul's graduate Lamonte Wade added two home runs in the win. Catcher Kevin Martir also went deep in the win.
The ACC tournament features two four-team pools, with a round-robin stage ahead of the conference final. Maryland finishes up pool play against No. 7 North Carolina at 3 p.m. Saturday.
In the conference final 1 p.m. Sunday, the Terps will face either Georgia Tech or Duke.
