Johns Hopkins University announced Friday that it has begun an initiative to raise money for a music scholarship in honor of late freshman men's lacrosse defenseman Jeremy Huber.
The Jerm19Fund Scholarship will entail a piano scholarship at the institution's Peabody Institute as a tribute to Huber, a Las Vegas resident who had played the piano since the second grade and enjoyed music from almost every genre. Huber, 18, was found dead in his dorm on Jan. 26 because of complications from pneumonia and flu.
The school has already raised almost $45,000 for the scholarship fund. The goal is to reach the $100,000 mark.
In an email sent to alumni and past donors, lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala called this past season "the toughest year" the program has experienced.
"Touching the lives of those around him is what made Jeremy most happy," Pietramala wrote. "In an effort to memorialize Jeremy and continue to have him positively impact the lives of others, we have worked closely with the Huber family and university officials to find the most appropriate way to do so."
