Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis was hitless in the Orioles' 10-6 win Wednesday in Boston, but he's got something else to hang his hat on.

A horse named after the longest-tenured Oriole won his first ever start on the turf at Laurel Park Wednesday afternoon by a length and a quarter over Caboppo.

Caboppo, as far as I can tell, is not named after a current Orioles star.

Markakis' trainer, Robin Graham, said in a release from the racetrack that Markakis "still doesn't know what he's doing."

The release said jockey Horacio Karamanos "had to hold on for dear life" as Markakis "dragged him through traffic."

I only get to pretend to know about horses in May, but while a payout of $28.40 is good, you might want to go with a horse that does know what he's doing next time.

Then again, Orioles Magic is a wild thing. Let me know when he races again.
