Dundalk native Bucky Lasek won his third gold medal of the year in skateboard vert at X-Games Munich on Thursday, continuing what has been one of the best seasons of the skater’s career.
Lasek did not complete a full run during his first three attempts, leaving the crowd in suspense and forcing him to pull a spectacular run on his fourth and final attempt, which gave him the win.
"I could have easily [played it safe and] done a run I've done before," Lasek said during his post-run interview. "But I wanted to switch it up and do some new tricks that I hadn't done at other X Games and I finally made it on my last run."
The win in Munich came just one week after Lasek won the skateboard vert competition at the Dew Tour in Ocean City. He also won gold at X Games events in Brazil and Spain earlier this summer.
Lasek is the second competitor to win three X Games gold medals in a row in skateboard vert competition. The first rider to accomplish that feat was Pierre-Luc Gagnon, who took second place at the event in Munich.
In addition to competing against each other, skaters had to deal with inclement weather as off-and-on rain forced many to attempt their best runs early.
"The rain affected me a little bit," Lasek said. "I was feeling strong and confident and then the rain came and I had a lot of time to think and overthink and I lost my rhythm."
Lasek will next compete in X Games Las Angeles, where he will go for a record-breaking fourth gold medal in a row.
