Cody Rhodes asks for release from WWE

Cody Rhodes sent out two tweets on Saturday afternoon announcing that he had asked for his release from WWE.

"The past ten years have been quite the trek, but as of earlier today I have asked for my release from @WWE," Cody wrote on his out-of-character Twitter account, @PrinceGCR. "I'll speak further on the matter shortly. Thank you to all the pro-wrestling/sports entertainment fans worldwide."

Cody Rhodes made his WWE main roster debut in 2007. He spent much of his career in the tag division, winning the tag titles with the likes of Hardcore Holly, Ted DiBiase Jr., Drew McIntyre, and finally his brother, Goldust. He went through many gimmick changes throughout that span, from spoiled second-generation star in Legacy to "Dashing" Cody Rhodes (and his disfigured counterpart), to teaming with his brother as a sympathetic face, and then most recently, Stardust.

It's worth noting that Cody is only 30 years old. It's possible that he could take a break from WWE for a few years, return, and still be in his prime as a superstar. We don't know his reasons yet, or if he's looking to stay in the business. If he is staying in wrestling, you know organizations everywhere will be lining up for their chance at landing someone who probably should have been in the main event at some point in his WWE career.
