Citadel fired former Maryland assistant coach Chuck Driesell after five losing seasons as head coach of the Bulldogs.
The school said in a statement Monday that it would not renew Driesell's contract, which ends in April.
Driesell, the son of longtime former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell, finished with an overall record of 42-113 at Citadel. His teams went 22-66 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs were 12-18 this season, posting their most victories in Driesell's tenure.
Citadel athletic director Jim Senter said Driesell did well instilling the military college's core values on his players, but Senter added that the program's on-court record did not meet expectations.
Citadel's last winning season was 2008-09, when it went 20-13. The school said in the statement it would not comment on the search process until a replacement is found.
