Mount St. Mary's released Wednesday its schedule for the 2014 season. Here is a breakdown of the slate that awaits the Mountaineers, who went 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast Conference and failed to qualify for the four-team league tournament last year.
10: Mount St. Mary's edged Bryant, 10-9, on April 20. The Bulldogs, who will host the Mountaineers on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m., have won the last two NEC tournament championships.
9: Maryland has won all nine meetings against Mount St. Mary's, which will visit Byrd Stadium in the season opener for both teams on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
8: The Mountaineers lost by a margin of at least eight goals four times last season. Their worst setback was a 23-6 rout by the Terps on Feb. 12.
7: Mount St. Mary's will play just seven games at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg next spring. The remaining nine contests will be on the road.
6: The Mountaineers will tangle with six Northeast Conference foes – an increase from five last year. Hobart and St. Joseph's have replaced Quinnipiac in the league.
5: The Mountaineers and Towson will meet for the fifth time on Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. The Tigers have won all four prior contests.
4: Mount St. Mary's will play a four-game homestand – the longest of the season – in March. The team will face Drexel on Saturday, March 15 at 12 p.m., UMBC on Saturday, March 22 at 12 p.m., Robert Morris on Tuesday, March 25 at 4 p.m., and Hobart on Saturday, March 29 at 12 p.m.
3: The Mountaineers will open the season with three straight road contests. After taking on Maryland, the team will visit Georgetown on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. and Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
2: Mount St. Mary's will meet UMBC for only the second time since 2003. The Retrievers edged the Mountaineers, 10-8, on March 23.
1: Mount St. Mary's and Hobart will face each other for the first time in each program's history. Mountaineers coach Tom Gravante, a 1988 graduate for the Statesmen, was a two-time first-team All-American attackman who recorded 141 goals and 69 assists while leading Hobart to Division III national titles in each of his four seasons there.
