With the start of the NHL season and MLB playoffs running concurrently as the calendar turns to October, Sports Illustrated lumped them together with some regional, cross-sport cover coverage.
One of those regional covers features Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones and Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, a somewhat unlikely pairing that doesn't make as much sense as the other cover boys.
In the west, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Stanley Cup-winner Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings pair up. In the heartland, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright and Olympic shootout hero T.J. Oshie of the St. Louis Blues are featured. You'll notice how both play in the same city.
Our friends down Interstate 95 will likely point out that Ovechkin shares a sporting city with the best team in baseball, the Washington Nationals, and that the stories that could emanate from an Ovechkin-Bryce Harper photo shoot might shut down the Internet as we know it.
The Capitals also bagged the annual preseason game in Baltimore because of lukewarm reception, so there's literally no connection between the two teams.
Expect this issue to dredge up collections of 100 photos accompanying a sentence about why one city is better than another on the respective websites of newspapers that cover those cities. And expect Ovechkin's allegiance to be called into question should the Capitals get off to a slow start and the Orioles play the Nationals in the World Series.
