Five Maryland players, including first-team selections midfielder Taylor Cummings, defender Megan Douty and attacker Brooke Griffin, were named All-Americans Monday by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Loyola had three selections and Johns Hopkins, one.
Midfielder Cummings, the 2014 Tewaaraton Award winner and a 2015 finalist, earned her third All-America honor. The McDonogh graduate was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year after leading the Terps -- seeded No. 1 for the NCAA tournament -- to the Big Ten regular-season championship.
Douty, last season's national Defender of the Year and a 2014 Tewaaraton finalist, leads a defense ranked fifth in Division I. Also a first-team selection last season, she is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
Griffin, a South River graduate, is a two-time first-team selection. The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year scored four goals in Sunday's NCAA quarterfinal win over Northwestern that sent the Terps to the national semifinals Friday night against No. 4 Syracuse at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.
Terps defender Alice Mercer (Century) was named to the second team and freshman attacker Megan Whittle (McDonogh) made the third team.
For Loyola, attacker Annie Thomas (John Carroll) made the second team while defender Maddy Lesher and midfielder Taryn VanThof were named to the third team. Johns Hopkins midfielder Dene' DiMartino made the third team.
Several other players with local ties were also among the 48 players selected: Boston College attacker Covie Stanwick (Notre Dame Prep) was named to the first team after leading the Eagles to the NCAA tournament second round.
Penn State's Maggie McCormick (Liberty) and Princeton's Erin Slifter (South Carroll) made second team and Virginia's Liza Blue (Garrison Forest) made third team.
Two freshmen other than Whittle made the teams: Northwestern's Selena Lasota on second team and Stony Brook's Kylie Ohlmiller on third team.
The All Americans will be honored at a banquet June 6 in King of Prussia, Pa.
