LANDOVER, MD — Right after fans observed a moment of silence at Fedex Field to honor fallen Maryland football player Jordan McNair, media members in the press box for Saturday’s college football game between the Terps and Texas Longhorns also fell silent to honor Capital Gazette journalist John McNamara.
McNamara, who began his journalistic career as a reporter for Maryland’s student-run newspaper The Diamondback, was one of five Capital staffers killed when a gunman invaded the newsroom in Annapolis on June 28.
He had been a regular presence at Maryland sporting events as well as covering other colleges and professional teams in the region. His place card was at what would have been his seat at the Terps opener on Saturday with a bouquet of flowers.
He spent 24 years with the Capital Gazette newspapers in a variety of roles, but his greatest love was sports writing. He was a friend or colleague to many of the media members present for Saturday’s game.
