Orioles first baseman Chris Davis just missed an opposite-field home run in Friday's home opener at Camden Yards, but he left no doubt with his mammoth homer to left-center field in the first inning of Saturday night's 7-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
That's a pretty good sign, considering Davis had trouble taking the ball the other way during his injury-plagued 2014 season.
"Yeah, I felt like the last couple of games, I was taking some good swings,'' Davis said. "I think my pitch selection was a lot better tonight. It was good to get into one to left-center."
But Davis didn't want to talk about himself after the game. He, like a lot of his teammates, wanted to talk about the fantastic performance of starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez.
"I was just really impressed with the way Ubaldo threw the ball tonight,'' he said. "After yesterday, to come out here and shut that team down the way he did was pretty impressive.
"I just thought he really pitched tonight. He trusted his stuff and went out there and executed his game plan. It was hard to tell what he's throwing from first [base] with him because everything he throws moves so much, but a lot of off-balance swings, a lot of takes on pitches that looked like they were right there. That tells you how much his ball was moving.
"I'm just glad for him to get out there and have a good outing and throw the way he's capable of throwing."
