If you can handle another six hours of baseball today – and you have access to more than just the local baseball broadcast – you have the option of watching a pretty amazing split doubleheader tonight.
The Tampa Bay Rays need to right themselves now. They open a huge series at Yankee Stadium tonight with David Price facing Yankees ace CC Sabathia in the opener. Price is a leading Cy Young candidate with his 17-5 record and 2.54 ERA. Sabathia has not put up his usual gaudy numbers, but he is still one of the top starters in the majors.
It’s a little early to call this a must-win series for the Rays, but after getting swept in Baltimore and dropping four games off the pace in the AL East and the wild-card race, they certainly need to win tonight and stop the bleeding.
The Orioles should know by the time they take the field in Oakland tonight – thanks to the three-hour time difference – whether they will have a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the AL East with a victory when newcomer Joe Saunders faces Tommy Milone in the opener of a three-game wild-card showdown with the Oakland A’s.
Obviously, that’s a lot of baseball for one night, especially if you played hooky from work Thursday and weren’t able to get back in time to punch out. I’m going to have to be seriously caffeinated to get to the end of the nightcap, but after all this time I’m sure none of us would have it any other way.
