The latest delightfully weird episode of FX's "Wilfred" involved some hilarious dogisms, and a few things you'd never see a real dog do.
But isn't that what makes "Wilfed" so wonderful?
My favorite dogism of the episode, which was titled "Fear," was when Ryan's (Elijah Wood) neighbor, Spencer (Ethan Suplee), had Wilfred (Jason Gann) chasing after a laser pointer for half the show. I've done this with my cats, and they nailed it.
Now, to the fantasy dog moves, which I loved just as much. I think I will let Jason Gann talk about Wilfred's prowess at pole dancing in a strip club:
"If I didn't see my own face on it, I wouldn't think I did it," Gann told me. "I couldn't get a stunt person to do that, but I injured myself doing it, my arm, but it was worth it. It looked real, and it was."
Gann, who co-created the original Aussie series and this American adaptation, got poledancing lessons from "a couple of real live strippers."
It wasn't easy either, he said, because the "paws" of his suit did not allow him to grip the pole easily.
"I had to take the hands off and attach them kind of on the top of my hands and have rubber bands around attaching them to my fingers," he explained. "And then they painted my hands black and, I think in the edit they just sort of tweaked it."
Although he said that the shot they used was "perfect," Gann was awfully modest about the whole affair.
"Out of all the takes, that was, I'm sure, the only one that was perfect like that. It still blows me away watching it," he said, laughing throughout the discussion on this topic. "The way I just slowly slide around, you know, as I'm going down. And then the finish, it's just really cool.
"Occasionally I crack myself up, and that was one of the times."
"Wilfred" airs at 9 p.m. Thursdays on FX.
