A message of hope during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Getting a cancer diagnosis of any kind is devastating, both for patients and their loved ones. It is the beginning of a long, difficult journey.

That's why we're promoting cancer awareness through this special edition of the paper.

Sadly, many of us have had a friend or family member who has been diagnosed with cancer. Too many people know what it's like to lose someone to this terrible disease, or watch a loved one go through the painful, uncomfortable treatments and surgeries necessary to try to defeat it. And too many people have had to suffer through those treatments and the uncertainty and fear that accompanies them.

Cancer makes people fear for what they have. It makes us question how such a devastating diagnosis can possibly fall on such amazing people. It makes us lose hope for a future we can no longer count on.

But it also makes us stronger. It makes us grateful for the moments we have with the people we love. It makes us hold onto those we hold most dear.

There is nothing good about cancer. But something good can be drawn from it. If you've ever been to a walk, run or other fundraiser held by a cancer awareness organization, you've seen the unity, the sense of togetherness, the feeling of community. The people there have all suffered. They have either faced cancer themselves or loved someone who has. But from that pain, they have chosen to make a difference. They have chosen to find whatever good they can by sharing their experience with others and using it to strive for a cure.

Cancer has touched so many of us. And while the loss many feel cannot ever be explained or healed, it can be given purpose. This month, and all months, let's come together to make the world a bit better. Let's fight to find a cure for the diseases that take so many lives. Let's stand together and prove that a life lived for others is never one lived in vain. Let's honor those we've lost by creating a world they would be proud of, and spreading a message they would appreciate.

There's nothing good about cancer. But something good can always be created. So this month, let's choose to create something good. For them. For us. For everyone fighting.
