Taking a bite of some sweet treats at Granny's

Occasionally on Friday afternoons, my boss and I will decide to go have lunch someplace we have never tried before. This past Friday was one of those afternoons. This time we had my boyfriend join us. When we finished at the office, we decided to go try a restaurant a patient had told us about but that we were not familiar with.

For the most part we think of the Owings Mills Mall as being a ghost town — and in many ways it is — but in the food court there is still one remaining place with the means to draw folks in. Of course I am talking about Granny's Restaurant.

When you enter Granny's you are greeted by happy, enthusiastic folks who make you feel like you are wanted and welcome. The restaurant has a lovely feel to it, with comfortable booths, tall-backed chairs and a lovely hardwood floor. There is also a bar area where you can sit and order at the counter.

They offer a drink called Granny's mix, which is a unique twist on southern iced tea. It is iced tea with fresh-squeezed lemonade sweetened with brown sugar. It's yummy; I could have finished a gallon of it. Even better, it comes with free refills.

I ordered the Granny's apple pie waffle. Oh my goodness was that ever a treat. It was a wonderful tender waffle made from a homemade batter — crisp on the outside and light and flaky on the inside — covered in fresh apple pie filling made from large apple slices and seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. Oh my goodness was this ever yummy.

My boyfriend ordered their shrimp and grits platter, which he enjoyed very much. His order came with cheese eggs, and he ordered a side of scrapple. The portions were nicely-sized, well seasoned, and he was more than full when we left. My boss tried the fried chicken and waffles. Again the portions were large, so much so that he took a good bit home with him.

You know me — I love desserts. For years I have been bragging that my grandmother made the best pineapple upside down cake ever. Well, I have to admit Granny's pineapple upside down cake is better than my grandmother's. Granny's pineapple cake is an individual cake with a pineapple ring and cherry on top. The cake itself is this wonderfully buttery pound cake with crunchy brown sugar edges. One portion lasted me three days. My boyfriend had their pound cake that comes with butter pecan ice cream and that was totally yummy, too.

Granny's is one of those places that you will just have to try to fully understand how good it is. Our server was telling us the place was named for the owner's grandmother, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 109.

Granny's is located at 10300 Mill Run Circle in Owing Mills.
