Enjoying 'friendly, quick service' at Dragon House Restaurant

Nestled in the Garrison Forest Plaza Shopping Center is an Owings Mills staple that most folks in town know and have eaten at at least once.

Dragon House Restaurant is still family owned and run, and has been for many years now. In the early 1990s, my late husband and I tried the food there one evening, and the restaurant quickly become one of our go-to places for a good meal at a reasonable price. The interior has not changed much in the 25 years I have been going there. The large tank full of eye-catching fish still greets you as you walk in the door.

Dragon House offers friendly, quick service and delicious food at a decent price. Personally, I like their lunch combos where you get an entree, fried rice and an egg roll for between $7 and $9, depending on your choice of entree. Dinner combination platters are just a few dollars more.

I really enjoy their chicken and noodle soup. In fact, frequently when I'm dining in, I end up taking home a pint of the soup for the next day. It has a great flavor, with what seems like yards and yards of Chinese noodles, stripes of white meat chicken and onions. Trust me: It hits the spot on chilly winter days like those we have been experiencing lately.

At lunchtime, I like to get the lemon chicken combo — this is chicken breast in a tempura batter that is lightly fried and served with a homemade lemon sauce that is very, very yummy. It comes with fried rice and an egg roll.

During dinnertime, my favorite meal is their shrimp in lobster sauce combo plate. It's a generous portion of shrimp in lobster sauce with fried rice, an egg roll and your choice of soup. Typically, I get the chicken and noodle, but I like the wonton and the chicken and rice soups, as well.

Their chicken and broccoli is equally as delightful, as is their chicken and mushroom, and beef egg foo young. Their chicken in spicy garlic sauce is great and they offer beef in spicy garlic sauce, too. I have also tried their beef mei fun, which was very good, as well. I find their beef in oyster sauce to be quite good and something rather unique.

Their appetizers are great. They make wonderful barbecue spare ribs, shrimp toast, crab wonton and, of course, yummy egg rolls.

And what meal would be complete without peppermint ice cream? I don't know what brand of ice cream they serve, but I do know it's amazing, creamy and delicious.

All meals come with a pot of tea. They also serve soft drinks and a full line of alcoholic beverages.

The service is always outstanding. Their waiters greet you with a smile and treat guests like family. I have never been in there and had a grumpy server or been unsatisfied with my meal or service.

One of the things I find amazing is how quickly they have your food ready for you — I have called in takeout orders and they have been ready and waiting for me in less than 10 minutes. Dining in can be accomplished in less than an hour.

Dragon House offers a relaxed and casual atmosphere that is great for a family dinner, a business meeting, or an intimate dinner for you and your honey.
