Charles Lollar, a Republican running for governor, will field questions for an hour Tuesday night during the latest Baltimore Sun Newsmaker Forum.

The event is the latest in a series of in-depth conversations with candidates competing to succeed term-limited Gov. Martin O'Malley.  The free forum begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

Lollar's campaign for the Republican nomination has drawn attention for his pledge to eliminate the state's income tax. He also backs repeal of Maryland's new gun regulations and says that while he personally disagrees with same-sex marriage, he would uphold the state's new law if elected governor. The Marine reservist, father of four and former business executive from Charles County has described himself as fiscal conservation and social libertarian.

Lollar gained notoriety in state Republican circles in 2010 as a Tea Party activist who launched an unsuccessful bid against Democrat U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer.

Tuesday night's forum will be moderated by Sun Editorial Page Editor Andrew A. Green.  Questions from readers can be submitted in advance by sending an email to talkback@baltimoresun.com, with the phrase "newsmaker forum" in the subject line.
