Over the eight days of early voting that concluded Thursday, turnout increased 57 percent over the previous midterm primary, when both Democrats and Republicans had competitive races for governor. It's impressive, but analysts caution not to read too much into it. Early voting tends not to predict what will happen on election day (this cycle's surge still represents only 6 percent of eligible voters), and turnout tends to climb after it's introduced (Maryland added early voting in 2010) before reaching a plateau.
